Werckmeister Harmonies: some kind of Eastern European allegory

I really don't know who or what Bela Tarr is but I'm not going in any hurry to see anymore of his films.

This is touted as an "allegory" brilliantly told in just 39 scenes for a movie that is 2 hours and 25 minutes long. This film only showed me a really sad, small Hungarian town where nearly everyone is an uncle or an aunt and the men folks just don't have enough to do. We see our young protaganist walk around time making deliveries and tending to his well-to-do uncle. Then, the whale and The Prince come to town and the sleepy, listless burg sees its male population ignite from idlers to destroyers of anything that represents the establishment.

The is a very well done B&W film that is long on mood and short on plot but I suppose that's what Tarr had in mind.

The monocle wearers probably will wax poetic about this one but not me.

Who's aggitat'in my dots?
