JJ, since you are such a stickler for detail, you should know that the correct phrase is "Gort! Klaatu barada nikto!"To answer your question, the movie was based on a short story called "Farewell to the Master" written by Harry Harrison in which the robot was clearly the master. The story was published in a pulp magazine called "Amazing Stories" (published by the great Joseph Campbell) and featured a cover illustration which depicted the robot holding Klaatu (dead) in his open hand. This same illustration was later used as the cover of a Queen album.
