"Them"

I don't know if it's the first one to do this but one of this film's best features is the withholding of our seeing the actual giant ants for a while, similar to the truck in "Duel" and (especially) the shark in "Jaws". I've always gotten a kick out of many things here: the way the the characters stay with the action even as it moves all over the country, the way civilians are allowed to comingle and fight alonside Army troops, the "Dragnet"-like use of quirky minor characters to provide both humor and to push the story along. This one is very well done and holds up well over time. Last night I even noticed a bending of the law by the government (an innocent character is detained for national security purposes). Some things never change.
