The Guardian"

I went prepared t hate Ashton Kutcher's performance in this, as I haven't seen anything he's in where he was remotely convincing. I was surprised to see that he does OK here, maybe even well. As everyone knows, this is a sort of Coast Guard "Top Gun" meets "Officer and a Gentleman", where troubled champion swimmer Kutcher enrolls in the Coast Guard's elite rescue swimmer course, now run by Kevin Kostner. Kostner has troubles of his own: his wife has left him and hanging over him is a decision he made on his last mission where his crew was lost.
A sort of rivalry develops bewteen the two, punctuated every so often by dramatic rescues at sea. Over time a bond develops, much like father and son. Other sub plots come and go, the major one involving a romance bewteen Kutcher and a local woman.
Speaking of women, we see two or thre getting off the recruitment bus and we hear the term "men and women" used but we never see the women in training, either with the guys or separatly. There is one cute blong out one night with the guys at a bar, but that's it. At graduation, it's all male.
VERY predictable, but then again so is a dinner at a favorite restaurant or a jazz or comedy performance by a familiar artist. Great action sequences make this one a worth while film.
