film, from the novel of the same name, was way ahead of its time in its stark, brutally direct telling of the story of a writer who refuses to compromise for his art.
Those who enjoy Bergman, Tarr, and Tarkovsky will appreciate it and be amazed at the performance of Per Oscarsson in the title role of a man desperate to create a masterpiece, no matter the cost. In fact, as difficulties mount, his devotion and single-mindedness seem to increase. Friends, acquaintances, potential lovers... even survival itself are beyond his care.
I don't know if this is an overwrought film; it certainly is a powerful story told as powerfully as the central character's personality.
It will remind, in the end, of nothing else you've seen and make you consider "art"-- and artists---in a different way.
Isn't that enough?
