Greatest director? No list possibly can be complete without

India's titan, Satyajit Ray.
"The Chess Players" isn't considered one of his finest, mind you.
In 19th century India, two friends who are addicted to chess gather everyday at one of their houses to engage in multiple games, much to the consternation of one wife who feels herself neglected, and to the glee of another that relishes the "free" time.
Simultaneously with this wittily told tale is woven the perpendicular one of this kingdom's takeover by the British, with Sir Richard Attenborough in the role of chief British military officer.
Kurosawa, a great admirer of Ray, said this film was imbued with "deep observation, understanding and love of the human race."
Not much to add except to greatly urge all film lovers to see it.
