My reaction to it was very strange and unique for me. I could not take my eyes off the screen, every image was beguiling and capticating with total and dominating good taste - given my unbridled love for classical art. At the same time I felt more and more tired as it went along, it was like an very essence of the best wine but just too condensed, I felt like I needed some water to dilute it to palatable level, just too much, too dense, too thick... I am asamed to admit, but after one hour I started rolling forward in fast mode, still captivated by images, but diluting, diluting...
When it comes to images thick to be cut with knife I know of nobody who comes close to Greenaway. Drowning by Numbers was much lighter than the Cook and you probably have seen the Pillow Book.
I have to struggle to make my wife go see his movies - she believes no one has the right to stick his hand into her guts and start tirning... I don't entirely disagree.
So anyone who loves oppulence and overindulgence should look no firther.

***I haven't seen many of Greenaway's films, but I thought The Cook, the Thief, His Wife, and Her Lover was very good. Helen Mirren is another fine actress who usually works in that alternative world to the Bruce Willis-Sharon Stone world.
She is one of my all-time favorite actresses. I even forgave her for her part in Caligula. Actually she was quite good there. Heck, there were SEVERAL people who were good there. Was there ever another effort like that one, with trully great actors doing trash?
