The Namesake

This film from director Mira Nair is the story of an Indian couple who move to New York to follow the man's career and then settle and have children there.
I don't think that spoils the film too much.
The most immediate thing about The Namesake is its complete believability.
There is an honesty combined with consistent quality acting here which really gets to you.
Tabu as the wife/mother is superb. There is one scene where her eyes just look like black holes in her soul. She really is fantastic.
This downbeat film is taken from a book and it does try to cover a lot of territory spanning some ... 30 years or more and moving from Kolkata to New York and back several times.
In its way its a beautiful film. The camerawork is outstanding as it contrasts hard and soft focuses and changes in colour between the countries.
Kal Penn is also very good as th son growing up in NY and then finding his Indian heritage inside himself as he matures.
There is also a lovely soundtrack from Nitin Sawheny.
You don't have to be a fan of traditional Bollywood to see this, just a fan of humanity.
Rally it's very very good.
