"Red River"

This is regarded as one the three best John Wayne roles/performances (the others are "The Searchers' and "True Grit"). In the Howard Hawkes film, he and Walter Brennan play budding ranchers who adopt a boy who, ten years later, has grown up to be Montgomery Clift. The three decise to drive their long horn cattle herd (plus others) to St. Louis to sell them and they run into the usual problems along the way. Clift eventually splits from the others and takes the herd toward Abilene, hoping that the railroad has reached there by then. Joanne Dru plays a wagon train gal Clift meets along the way and helps fight off an indian raid. Meanwhilea Wayne, not unlike his later Ethan character in "The Searchers", is obsessed with finding Clift and killing him. Very enjoyable if played a little broadly in places (the sugar guy who starts the stampede goes on and on in his clumbsiness). Beautiful black and white cinematography and shot on location.
