Curse Of The Golden Flower

Last night was preview (it opens Thursday) for The World Cinema Club and the guy doing the introduction and club stuff pointed out that Yimou had been working on outdoor opera productions at the time of making this film.
I think that really shows.
The music seems at least as important as any of the dialogue right through the closing credits with the chrysanthemum changing colour against the equally changing background.
In contrast to 300 which had fight scenes using curiously similar costumes, this film has the colour turned to saturated. The palace interiors are almost beyond belief in their sumptuousness.
As clark pointed out some of the plot is strained, but if you take it as opera then it's probably better to sit back and let it wash over you, especially the second half where all the action happens.
Beautiful music.
And at times Gong Li looks almost like Bellucci.

The sets are totally extraordinary and this is just such a beautiful thing to watch.
To yourself a favour.
