"Innocence": W-T-F?

A beautifully filmed story of a young girls living in a mysterious boarding school deep in the woods of Belgium. Very much Twin Peaks meets whatever you want to make it. Having a dirty mind, I figured this was The Story of O: The early years. But, it wasn't necessarily that...maybe.

For two hours we sate our pedophile interests watching children from ages seven to twelve live an almost idyllic life with few demands made of them except for dance practice given my Marion Cotillard and lessons of life given by another mysterious French actress.

When a child arrives, she does so in a casket. She is then surrounded by attending children for the ribbon ceremony where all the youngest are given the color red. As a girl grows older she wears different colors until purple. Purple notes their last year.

Oddly, the kids are cut off from the real world and have nearly forgotten what is outside the wall. They know as they develop they will move on and are will be told to do "secret things".

Iris, the casket-born Asian girl, attaches herself to the older Bianca. Iris soon notices that Bianca is involved in something of a confidential nature but she is stymied by the threat of "punishment" which always hangs over their heads.

There is something very Lynch-like in the layout of the school and the lighted walk that runs through the woods at night. This movie moves at a somewhat glacial pace but it's something you can live with as long as you put yourself in a trance-like mood. There's plenty of rushing water and background thunder in the soundtrack. It's a puzzle without all the pieces.

Beautiful to look, hard to figure, make it what you want.
