"Play Time:" Tati's masterpiece is so clever, from the first scene on,

that it makes pretty much any other satire seem thick-witted, heavy-handed, and obvious.
You must pay the strictest of attention not only to the main character framed in each scene but to all the corollary action around him. The sets are brilliant and the complexity of some of them is breath-taking.
Also, the inventiveness of the script, the effortlessness with which events unfold, is original. There is NO other stylist anywhere similar. There are many chuckles and smiles throughout which only make the belly-laughs, when they arrive and trust me they do!, all the more powerful.
Mind now, this isn't light comedy. It is high art which has chosen to express itself through comedy. I think it's apparent, from the very few classic comedies compared to those in the dramatic vein, that it is the much more difficult of the two.
What is even more startling is that Tati only mumbles a few words throughout the entire film: it's the purest of cinematic experiences.
I might add that, although it obviously is of a period--- obvious because of the perfect attention to style and fashion (you won't see more elegant men and women in any film than are apparent in the restaurant/club scene)--- you won't feel the least bit that it is dated. In fact, its acid dissolves society's mannerisms just as strongly today as when it was made decades ago.
Brilliant as a new-cut diamond in the noon day sun.
