I would say rather, DP for The Red Shoes & Black Narcissus.

Two of the most glorious Technicolor films ever lensed. (He won the Oscar for BN.) As a cameraman, Cardiff filmed the first British Technicolor movie in the late thirties, but he was give his big break by Powell and Pressburger, who hired Cardiff as DoP on their masterpiece A Matter Of Life & Death. We have discussed this David Niven film recently here, which was beautifully filmed and made great use of contrasting color & B&W.

A true genius of cinema, Cardiff drew his inspiration from great paintings and it shows - he was truly a master of light. Scorsese said Cardiff could "paint with a camera."

I only remember his directing on Sons & Lovers - I'll have to go to IMDB and check out the rest of his films as director.
