"Sin Nombre," by first time feature director Cary Fukunaga. Mild spoiler.

In Guatemala, a young gang-banger's girlfriend meets a violent end at the hands of the barrio gang boss. Impulsively, the grieving young man revenges her death and is forced to flee to the US from certain retribution from his fellow "homies."
As he runs, he meets a fellow traveler: a very young, very innocent woman who recently discovered facts of her family's past which have left her shaken. A violent incident joins them as they attempt to escape both the pursuing gang and corrupt Mexican police.
Both principal actors were well-chosen, both eschew any histrionics. The gang boss also gives a memorable performance.
The director, however, displays NO originality or ability to frame or plan a scene in a dramatic fashion. It all is so matter-of-fact that we may as well be watching a soap opera.
The script also is very, very predictable with nary a surprise anywhere.
The Best Film? Hardly, though, it is a very good effort and well worth a visit.
