Possible Spoilers -- If you want to enter the movie unsoiled, read no further.

This is the first of three independent films on the nature of romance coming. (the other two are Adam and Paper Heart) This opened in my hometown two weeks ago.

The narrator states that it is a "boy meets girl" story and not a love story. It is about the 500 days that a girl "Summer" affects the boy, Tom, from first noticing, to desiring, to dating, to conflict, to break up and to suffering miserably and thereafter told in the pov from the boy. It is done out of order (almost randomly picking certain days out of the 500 and the break up occurs fairly early on and is not a big spoiler.

The leads are well played and Zooey Deschanel and Joey Gordon-Levitt inhabit their roles nicely. From a boy's pov, Zooey is definitely very dreamy (though I have never warmed up to her singing) and my wife told me that she thought the same about Joey G-L. It helps that the leads are so likeable and desireable. The story is not too deep but it takes an unconventional route. The photography is nice and you get some surreal turns in tone and moviemaking along with the long breakup that many of us unfortunately know.

Its a great date movie and I highly recommend it. Can't wait for the other two to come.
