"Farewell": Uphappy Ruski + Hapless French Engineer = Big Espionage

This is based on the true account of the greatest espionage coups during the Cold War. The story starts in 1981 when a French engineer (living in Moscow with his wife and kids) is asked to do a "drop" by a French intelligence officer. Little did Froment know that he was being sucked into a huge spy game with a disaffected Soviet KGB officer, Grigoriev. Our KGB who is totally disillusioned with the USSR begins to pass an nearly unbelievable amount of intell to Froment which in turn goes to Mitterand and Reagan (Fred Ward). As the game progresses Froment's wife becomes paranoid and demanding that he quit while "Farewell" says he will not work with anyone else. We see the troubles Farewell has with his unhappy wife, his estranged teen-aged son, and passionate mistress but he seems resolute in his bid to undermine his government at any cost and nearly manages it alone.

The film has a lot of "giveaways" such as Farewell passing the plans to the US space shuttle with comments by Russian scientists as to why it will burn up, all the launch codes for our defenses, and the French nuke sub routes for six months in advance. On the other side Farewell passes detailed lists of Soviet operatives in all the Western alliance nations which were rounded up near the end of his effective operational span.

This is a rather ordinary film (production-wise) of an extraordinary story. I appreciate from that standpoint. That is not to say the movie is done poorly in any aspect but to say this is substance over style.
