Well, have you? Didn't think so.

It was made in 1975 by the team (Brownlow and Mollo) who gave us the hypothetical Nazi invasion of England movie 'It Happened Here' several years earlier. 'Winstanley' follows the idealistic social reformer and writer Gerrard Winstanley in the years following the English civil war and his attempt to establish a farming commune in the face of landowner oppostion. All the characters are well fleshed out, with no cookie-cutter bad guys in sight. In fact, the whole movie defies convention.

It is beautifully lensed in 16mm and 35mm B&W, fantastically restored by the BFI and available on Blu-Ray.

The use of light and shadows is particulary alluring. The performance by Miles Halliwell as Winstanley is wonderful. The historical accuracy is also incredible (the extras go into detail of just what they did to achieve accuracy, including borrowing original English civil war armour from the Tower of London). 'Winstanely' is one of those haunting little gems of cinema which seem to slip through the cracks. Pity.
