Red Box Curiosities

'Cold Comes The Night'

A struggling motel operator gets drawn into (by force) helping a nearly blind bagman who wants to get "his money" from the crooked local sheriff. This is a stock gritty, violent story of innocent vs. evil with a twist. Bryan Cranston plays an aging criminal with a seriously heavy Russian accent getting "one last job" to prove he is still "gang ready". Alice Eve plays a down-and-out single mom who struggles to protect her daughter and watch out for her own interests. Eve was a surprise in this. I've only seen her as a lot of red lipstick and filling out skivvies in a spectacular fashion. This was left behind as she wore "no" makeup, spoke with a great American accent, and brought nuance and intelligence to the role of Chole. I was surprised with her talent and a bit let down with Cranston who was long-distance. The story has nice twists and the requisite amount of blood and squibs for gritty crime.


'Deadly Code' or Once Upon A Time In Siberia

The sprawling tale (memoir) tells the story of growing up inside a crime clan in the Urka community where crime and religion are one and the resulting code closely parallels that of Robin Hood. Two best friends are separated when one is captured and sentenced to seven years in prison. When he is released Gagarin is wise to the world and no longer interested in the code he was raised wth. The film is woven with flashbacks and shows an unrelenting picture of life in Russia. Being an Italian production it cannot help but be a "Once Upon a Time" script. John Malkovich is pitch perfect as the grand father and patriarch of the community. Peter Stomare appears briefly as a renown tattoo artists who coaches Kolyma in his profession.
