'A Quiet Place': Refreshingly Tense

Situational sci-fi. No real background story other than these hideous creatures (from where?) have nearly eliminated the Earth's population. They are blind but have ear canals the size of the Grand Canyon and a mouth full of teeth reminiscent of Niagra Falls. Oh, they are fast! Swoop and you are a goner. (One thing that bothered me at first was the creatures' nasty clicking that alien monsters tend to do in most lower budget sci-fi films. We move past it.)

Krasinski and Blunt have three small kids who have learned that "silence is golden". In the beginning, we see how they scavenge and guard against making the slightest sound. Of course, that can't last forever and the tension grows as the sounds the family makes grow with frequency. These clicking critters are slowly revealed as the Alien was decades yore. As the climax intensifies, we end on a more positive, kick ass note.

The child actors deserve kudos for their performances. They weren't rapping-off Shakespeare but they were earnest, believable, and non-cutesy. Krasinski and Blunt were good with Blunt always highlighting the vehicle she stars in. Good effects without being overdone and this film probably cost much less than it appears.

Worth seeing. Depends handy if you are jumpy.
