You may need to build your system one step at a time. This may be better in the long run, as you'll get better components. It's how I did my system many years ago.

First and foremost is a good surround provessor. You can get an Outlaw 1050 (sold on the web only) surround processor for $500-$600(?) which will be great!

DVD is also a must (although its benefits will be limited until you get a better TV.) Still, I'll bet you can get a decent DVD palyer for under $200 brand new.

For years, my 2-channel speakers doubled as part of my HT setup.
