Interesting--more info about the problem

I noticed last night, watching Lawrence of Arabia, that whenever this audible glitch happened it coincided with the preamp receiving a burst of PCM via the optical input and then returning to AC3. Whenever it switches from one to the other, there is what sounds like a burst of static. I assume a good DVD player would output a continuous AC3 signal and this wouldn't happen. Otherwise I am screwed because me preamp is seeing some breaks in the AC3 signal as an opporutnity to turn off and on the speaker field.

Well, screwed may be a dramatic way of putting it. The problem is quite subtle.
