Re: Onkyo 797

68.67.142.97

I have an Onkyo TX-DS797 and I like it just fine. Haven't noticed any audio drop out problems whatsoever.

I picked up a Denon 85 wpc amp (PMA 500 V) for $60 used for the back surround speakers. (the 797 is 6 channel amplified, but it has 2 back surround pre-outs) The 797 is DVD-A compatible and is very good for music.

I had a Harmon Kardon AVR65 and the Onkyo just blows it away.

Source is either Digital Cable (I like the space music) and a Toshiba SD9200 DVD-A player.

Speakers - originally I had a pair of Axiom M50s up front, Merak MC6H (by Axiom) center channel, Velodyne CHT100 sub, Merak MT66 side surrounds and Mission 77ds back surrounds.

I got a pair of Michaura M665 towers (also built by Axiom), moved the M50s to the side and kept the Missions in the back. I just swapped the Axiom M50s for a pair of Michaura M55s to test them out in that position. Their highs are so open and the speakers are so efficient I thought they might be interesting.

If you can't get a pair of Michaura M665s for the front, I'd consider getting a pair of Axiom M60s, and matching center (VP150), a pair of Michaura M55s or Axiom M3s for the side surrounds and a pair of QS4s or 8s for the back surrounds.

Enjoy your new Onkyo, it's a fine receiver.
