Re: DVD Regional coding

Region coding.

When the DVD standard was set, the DVD Committee, under pressure from the Hollywood studios to protect their precious staggered world film releases, agreed to split the globe into different areas for DVD releases.

9 DVD regions were created, which are:

Region 1 - North America and Canada;
Region 2 - UK, Europe, South Africa and Japan;
Region 3 - Southeast and East Asia, Hong Kong;
Region 4 - Australia and New Zealand, the Pacific and Central and South America;
Region 5 - Russia, India, Africa and some limited Asian countries;
Region 6 - China;
Region 7 - Not currently in use;
Region 8 - Special use eg. Aircraft and oil rigs;
Region 0 - Unrestricted.
