I needed to know the same thing for around $300. I did alot of research on the web and read alot of reviews. It seemed for the money the Toshiba models were the best out there. I dont know if there is a special high end off market brand in that price range. Like Marantz.
I bought the Toshiba and it blew away my 2 yr old Sony away in ever aspect
