NAD T531 DVD/CD Player (Problems, HELP!)

I recently bought the NAD T531 DVD/CD Player. The sound is good, great even, when playing CDs but having problems when playing some DVDs. The picture fades slowly dark then light again; it also freezes sometimes. This primarily occurs on the rented DVDs, I bought a couple of DVDs and they play perfect though this is a concern.
I've seen this happen on some lower end models my friends have bought but I payed quite a bit for this thing. Is this common? Or should I say is it more a function of the DVDs than the player? this is my first player so I have little experience with them. thanks for any advice you can spare.
