Although, I have the subjective impression that DTS gets more spectacular results, the recent issue of $ensible Sound suggests that ain't neccessarily so. Per the article the problem is setting up your gear so that you get all the various adjustments correct for both so thay can be comparred on an equal basis. When they are correct (optimized?) for both the differences disappear. However, it sounds like achieving this is no trivial matter. As there seems to be a common subjective impression that DTS sounds better for HT it may well be that AVRs are just more DTS friendly and/or that in many cases the DTS track was produced with more care.

My advice is to assume that the DTS track is usually going to sound better but sometimes not. So if you rrally care, check them out for each disc and play the one that seems to sound better. Even if there are reasons why one (DTS or DD) is potentially better friom a technical standpoint, the implementation on a particular disc may moot this.
