dvd rom on my pc says "insert disc" when one is already inserted

I got a standard 8x DVD-ROM from a buddy of mine and installed it into my pc, Windows Me found the driver for it and installed it....so far so good....when I play a music cd or one of my kids games through it , no problem. However, when I try to load a rented DVD movie in it, I get the above error message even though the dvd is loaded properly in the player.....what gives? Any help please? My Power DVD software is "itchin" to try a movie
