First up forget about any further upgrade and I would not worry about lusting after an MC1. Dolby pro logic can be quite effective although I must admit PLII is a major improvement on what the CP3 has (and note the MC1 does not sport PLII).

I had a CP3 for awhile and it was moderately effective at giving artificial ambience through rear speakers BUT do not expect too much from it.

For starters I suggest you try using it as a processor on your front and rears. If you find it messes up the stereo sound (most likely) then use a feed out from your preamp to offer audio for the rears only. You can then turn it off when the rear signal irritates.

For its time it was a most sophisticated unit but this area of electronics has progressed dramatically in the last few years. But as a freebie, what have you got to lose? Have fun experimenting.
