DVD idiot needs help.

Hi folks....
I'm finally considering getting myself a DVD player. I was holding out for a DVD recorder, but I'm caving.
Anyways, I currently have a regular interlaced TV and am not ready to invest in a new TV just yet. Although my TV will not accept a progressive scan signal, is it a good idea to get a DVD player that does both progressive scan and interlaced? At the same price point, will a DVD player that does not output progressive scan be of significantly higher quality than a DVD player that can output both?
