From a Sony ES receiver, most high-end pre/pros feel lousy!

This is my dilemma.
I wanted to upgrade from a Sony ES receiver to a pre/pro + amp combo, but I keep looking back coz even most high-end pre/pros behave lousy (especially on bass management and other convenience/configurability features) in comparison to the Sony ES's pre/pro stage. But I would agree that the DACs in dedicated pre/pros are leagues ahead in quality.
Anybody in this situation? What is the best solution? I don't want to feel losing something when upgrading.
