That unit, the Video Filter, is for "digital" recorders only. I've used one and can say it works perfectly -- even for DVD to Sony D8 digital camcorders! The Video Filter defeats D/CGMS -- the copy protection "disease" for digital recorders. That's why it works. However, it will NOT work for analog VCRs.

What Mel needs is a DVD player that has Macrovision defeated. If you search the web, you will find plenty of sites that offer Macrovision disabled players. I've made perfect DVD to VHS dubs of several movies. The model I have is the SAMPO DVE-612. Matter of fact, I bought one for the same reason he's looking for one -- to make VHS tapes for my soon to be 3 year old son to use in his TV/VCR combo (we have a portable DVD player for the road -- the $349 7" widescreen Mintek DVD1710 from Best Buy).
Regardless of where you get it from, DO NOT under ANY circumstances get the SAMPO DVE-612(N). Notice the (N) designation. It cannot be Macrovision disabled nor made to be region-free, so don't let anyone BS you. And that's according to the "full-time" hackers. I've warned you.
