help troubleshooting progressive scan

A friend of mine has a philips progressive scan dvd player and a sony plasma tv. When he presses the progressive scan button on his dvd player, he's noticing 3 distinct "distortion lines" across the picture. The geometry goes out of whack also.
Would simply loading a copy of Video Essentials help him calibrate his set? Or is something else at work here, like improper hookup or incompatibility between tv and dvd player. I've progressive scan players can cause some problems with older sets. Unfortunately, I don't know the model number of either his tv or dvd player. Any help would be appreciated. bill
