I suggest you check out www.antennaweb.org to determine the type of antenna that might be appropriate for your circumstances. Some folks get by with indoor or attic antennas. The Zenith Silver Sensor has a good reputation for an indoor antenna. But, roof mounted antennas generally work better. Whether you need an amplifier depends on how much gain your antenna provides and the losses in your cabling system. Good brands of outdoor antennas include ChannelMaster and Winegard. I would suggest your avoid Terk. It is not that their antennas work any worse than equivalent antennas from other manufacturers. But they don't offer the big outdoor antennas that are often required. And Terk antennas tend to poor in the price/performance area.

As far as any UHF bowtie working if your are within 50 miles, well that is pure B.S. It might work for some folks. It won't for many if not most.
