Can someone discuss the difference in the resolution generally provided by HD plasmas sets as compared with rear projection CRT HDTVs? As understood, the better rear projection sets can approach reproduction of 1080i (1080 x 1920), whereas even the high-end plasma panel sets are limited to the equivalent of less than half the total pixels in pictures displayed by good CRT sets. - I realize that there are other factors, and that the picture obtainable with a plasma set can be brighter, particularly in normal lighting. However, if you multiply the number of horizontal and vertical lines for both, there's a substantial difference.
Another thing that puzzles me is the way most dealers and sales personnel seem to not have any understanding whatsoever of the concept of native resolution in panel sets. Or, they DO understand it but don't want to acknowledge it. They insist that their upper-end HD panels can display 1080i, but as far as I can determine, all the panel sets that mention 1080i compatability are simply RECEIVING 1080i signals and then downgrading them, and displaying them at a lower resolution. The explanations and rationalizations given by various dealers on this point is simply amazing.

I understand that the enhanced brightness and contrast provided by some of the plasmas may be preferable for some programs, and that there aren't many good 1080i broadcast sources. However, I wouldn't want to spend that kind of money ($8,000 - $15,000) on a set that would always be restricted and limited in it's capabilities, particularly as more HD programming is made available, and as blue laser DVDs are introduced. Also, if used in a large room, and if it's a good clear HD picture, I would prefer a screen size of at least 60 inches, and preferably more.
Can anyone provide a link to sites that would explain the differences, and the advantages and limitations of the various systems?
