1. There is no such thing as flat CRT. Any so called flat CRT is acually worse than ANY standard CRT in terms of engineering to the best. FORGET about flat CRT it just does not exist yet. There is a way to do it, but it is so complicated to the point that circuitry that would drive this CRT is still beyond our technology.
2. Viewing distance for CRT (standard) PAL is 6 diagonal lenght of the screen. For NTSC (I could not find specs anywhere), but since NTSC is worse than PAL, distance should be even bigger. I would estimate to 6.5 lenghts of the screen.
Everything made for PAL is made with this distance in mind. This provides best picture and details. For NTSC, well... it's american systems, this means no rules, no standards, no respect to consumer.
