How does the Denon DVD 5000 compare nowadays?

I have the chance to get a really great deal on a Denon DVD 5000 that has just been serviced ( Laser replaced ). This DVD player was regarded as one of the best at the time of release. There was a lot of talk about whether it was worth the money ( AUD5,000.00 ). I can pick this one up for AUD 1,400.00. If I am not interested in DVD-Audio or SACD, how does this player stack up with the players availiable now for about the same money - say USD800; GBP500? Has the technology improved much since, what 1999? How does it play plain CD's?
