5.1ch downmixed to 2ch when played in 2ch system?

TVs, VCRs, DVD players, Home Theater systems and more.

few dvd movies have 2ch sound track. no problem in that case.
but the majority of dvd movies seems to have only 5.1 track.
i have denon 2900 connected to ML383 which is a 2ch integrated amplifier.
i did, however, set up the denon 2900 in stereo mode(not in multi-ch mode in which 5 or 6 speaker set up is required)
here's my question.
when 5.1 track is played, does my 2900 take it and down-mix it to 2ch?
or am i hearing only 2 ch out of 5.1 ch?
