Adding 6th channel to 5.1 rig - any experiences?

Have a Proceed AVP, and did not want to spend the $2,000 to upgrade it (plus I found that Lexicon is no longer doing the upgrades, now that Madrigal's moved to Lexicon's plant). So I have been thinking about buying a Proceed or other similar processor specifically designed to add the rear surround channel to a 5.1 setup.
Has anyone tried this route, and how well did it work?
