There are 3 common ways to get HDTV programming:1) Direct off-the-air (OTA) HDTV broadcasts using a UHF antenna pointing at your local broadcast transmitting towers. For this, you will need an HDTV tuner, UHF antenna, and HDTV capable TV set. The major networks in most major markets are broadcasting in HDTV. PBS stations are also broadcasting in HDTV. With a decent antenna pointed in the right direction, these broadcasts are free.
2) Satellite HDTV broadcasts using an HDTV capable satellite receiver and HDTV satellite service - check with DirecTV, Dish Network, Voom.
3) HDTV over cable. Check with your cable provider. They will supply an HDTV capable set-top-box to attach to your HDTV capable TV set.
I'm using a Samsung HDTV tuner and a cheap RadioShack outdoor UHF TV antenna. I'm able to pick up a handful of 'off the air' HDTV broadcast stations FREE OF CHARGE in my area. I'm picking up the major networks as well as a couple PBS stations.
