Pioneer DV47A versus Sony PS2 Playback

Here is the question. Tonight was movie night with the family and we got to watch Spykids 3D (yippie!). Anyway, the top level menu would not play on the 47A. Movie played fine however. It had the same problem on both discs (2d and 3d version). The PS2 displayed menu just fine. What causes this? Quirky disc or quirky player...? Discs were brand new and either player less than 6 months.
Maybe I should be grateful for one more reason the kids won't touch my stuff.
Needless to say that the video quality of the 47A was better. Every other DVD disc played on 47A just fine including CD, DVDa, SACD.
