Help appreciated: coaxial connection won't work

I am attempting to transform my home theater from 1991 Dolby prologic (Sony STRAV-1020) to 5.1 Dolby digital and DTS.
I bought a Panasonic SAXR10 receiver and a Toshiba 3950 DVD player from eBay, "open box" specials.
I have hooked the DVD player to the receiver with a Philips digital coaxial cable, but the receiver doesn't seem to realize it is there. Everything seems to work OK on both units using analog outputs and inputs.
Reading the manual for the DVD, (if all else fails...) I see there are two formats of coaxial output, bitstream and PCM. Toggling back and forth doesn't help.
I expect there is some extremely obvious step I've omitted and someone here can help me.
