older avr hooked into hdtv... possible?

I am thinking of buying a hdtv, but own an old avr receiver (a harmon kardon 80ii with a dolby adp-303 processor added) The receiver has no inputs for component video, only S video. Is it still possible to get a progessive scan image out of this. Can I hook my optical cable to the receiver and hook my dvd conponent cables directly to the tv. If it is not possible to do this and I must usr S video cables will I get a better picture if I use a hdtv as opposed to a regular one. I a bit of a dummy about this and any input is thanked
