Problems setting up DAC combo for HT and audio

203.76.17.20

Here are four questions I have regarding my setup (see below).

1. My DVD player offers 96/24 support but the receiver doesn’t (it downsamples to 48kHz before converting to analog). If I ditch the digital link and connect the audio analog outputs of the DVD to the receiver (and therefore use the Pioneer’s DAC rather than the Nak’s) will it make a heap of difference in terms of sound quality?

2. In the Pioneer manual it says I should not ‘cue’ DTS discs or I will experience damaging noise levels. What does the word ‘cue’ mean in this context? Nudge? Pause? Play? Btw, I do occasionally get bursts of annoying noise when starting or stopping DVDs (even Dolby Digital encoded). Anyone else had this problem?

3. I am thinking about buying a new external DAC (the Musical Fidelity X-24K) and would like to connect both my DVD player and CD transport to it. As I am running two systems (one for home theatre and the other for two-channel audio) I will have two incoming digital signals (one from the DVD player and one from the CD transport). The X24-K accepts two digital inputs but has only one analog out stage. If I send the analog signal to my preamp via the X-10D and then either to the Nak receiver (when playing DVDs) or the power amp (when listening to music) is this the best way of routing the two analog signals? I’m concerned that the sound from the DVD might be degraded by going through so many routes, ie from the DAC to the X-10D to the pre-amp, then to the receiver (plus the main speaker sound then goes back via the power amp).

4. I have a SCART connection between my DVD player and TV. Is this the same standard as Component Video?

Would appreciate any advice.
