How do you measure room acoustics? GM ?

GM and others,

How do you measure room modes and room frequency response?
I know the SPL meter needs a correction curve for truer readings.
What other methods (software systems) do people here use?
Looking for something that can model a room that is NOT a rectangle (RPG software) and use the Radio shack SPLas a microphone input.
