Coax for RF (cable, satellite, video) distribution?

204.191.205.185

One thing I've never seen in these home theater forums is any discussion on coax (RG-59, RG-6, etc) for video distribution within the home and from the dish to the receiver and cable-drop to TV, etc.

I have spent some time on this and have picked (I believe) the best coax for this. I looked at Belden, CommScope, and Alpha, and focused on the Belden line. I looked only at RG-6. Candidates were 1828A, 1829A, 9118, 9114, 1189A, 1613A, 9060, and 9058. Some of these are designed with base-band or head-end applications, some are broad-band. Some Alpha models to consider are 8650, 8610 and 8611. CommScope is what you will probably find at Home Depot, and the model I'm familliar with is 5726.

With regard to the Beldon models, all of these are minimum 1000 ft spools (except 1828A which is 500 ft), and you'll probably have to order them from a Belden reseller. But they cost anywhere from $130 to $280 for that 1000 ft so you could wire the shit out of your house with that. The 1828A and 1829A are sweep-tested to 1.8 GHz so they are good candidates for satellite down-links.

In the end I chose the 9060 because of it's 95% braid coverage. It seems to have the absolute best ability to keep out external interference (Belden has some graphs on that). It's signal attenuation is very low. However, this cable has been discontinued by Belden, but I did order a 1000 ft spool that was still in stock. Cost for that is about $200 (not bad if you're going to do a lot of cable runs between rooms, etc). If you can't get the 9060 the 9058 and 1613A would be my next pick.
