Clarification on LFE

Please help to clarify this question if you have the answer:
If you connect a powered sub to the L/R pre-out on the receiver instead of the usual subwoofer pre-out and set the main speakers to large with no sub on the receiver, will the LFE signal encoded in DD5.1 be sent to the main speakers + the sub? Or the LFE is sent to the sub channel only? Thanks.
