What is the purpose of a pre-amp.?

if you got a ht receiver a dvd player and all the speakers full dd 5.1 ch surround why would you want a pre-amp
should i add one.? do i need one.? is my set up wrong.? does my receiver need 5.1 channel inputs.? can i still add one even if my system is optically connected.?
please help.?
