Zones refers to different parts of the world. I am in Australia and we are zone four. Currently there are only about 500 zone four disc availiable. The zones are there for the big hollywood studios to control the release times and distribution of discs. Some zone 1 (USA & Canada) DVDs are released before we even have the movies in the cinemas.
