Best HT Subwoofers

Some friends of mine would like to get into HT, and would like some recomendations on subwoofers. I don't know their price range, but let's make some recomendations for different ranges, such as:
a. Less than $1000
b. Under $1800
c. Over $1800
In the over $1800 category, I'd definately recommend the sub I got for movies... the Velodyne HGS-18. Maybe not the fastest sub for music, but definately the nicest, smoothest, powerful sub I've heard for home theater. I haven't really looked at other price ranges, so please post your recomendations and reviews. Thanks.
