Best settings on Sony WEGA for watching VHS?

We watched a VHS of Gladiator tonight on my super-new Sony 27" wega. The picture was blurry. The daytime scenes were fine, but the shadowy scenes were TOO dark and somewhat fuzzy. (I had "movie" set as my picture mode and it was the best of the bunch)
I now have the same tape in the same VCR on a 10+ year old Panasonic and its playing crystal clear! DVDs look great on my WEGA though. So is there some recommended setting for watching movies from a VCR?
